- Earned varsity letter in basketball at Southwest Missouri State College
- Played forward on SWSC basketball team which won Missouri Inter- Collegiate Association Championship title - setting scoring record
- Elected Captain of All-League Team
- Led Missouri Valley AAU in scoring field goals
- Selected as Tournament All-Star forward of Tri-State District Basketball champions - Barnsdall B Squares of Seneca, Missouri
- 1947-Played with Tulsa Eagles & Tulsa Diamond Oilers, AAU Basketball Teams
- In 1929 led Missouri Valley AAU in scoring field goals and played on two teams winning national championship titles during his career and rated as one of the greatest forwards in amateur basketball.
- "This lithe Indian lad, "Chief" James, became one of the legendary heroes of Missouri basketball, compiling amazing scoring records with Andy McDonald’s fine Springfield Teachers’ college teams. He subsequently led the Missouri Valley AAU League - Which has furnished the last eight national amateur champions - in scoring one season."
